Skrillex is best known for being an American electronic music producer. He’s also know for being a DJ, singer, and songwriter. He was born Sonny John Moore, in Los Angeles, California in 1988. When asked what his musical influences are, Skrillex has stated he has been a longtime fan of Warp, which is an electronic music label releasing artists such as Aphex Twin.
In 2004, he joined the band From First to Last as their lead singer. He had originally wanted to play guitar for them, but after producers heard him sing, they placed him as lead singer instead. Together, they recorded two albums, and had two successful tours, one being Vans Warped Tour. In 2006, Moore started to suffer from vocal problems, and had to undergo surgery. Though it was successful, he decided in 2007 to leave the group to pursue his solo career.
In late 2007, he began touring on his own, growing into 2008 where he toured with Alternative Press. There he began to work promoting bands such as All Time Low and The Rocket Summer. Most of the shows where sold out, and the popularity of the tour landed all of the bands involved being featured in Alternative Press Magazine’s annual 100 Bands Your Need To Know special.
At this time, Moore began using the name Skrillex when he performed at clubs. Previous to this, he had only used the name Twipz on the Internet. Moore was scheduled to produce a studio album in 2009, but stopped working on the album and instead began performing under the name Skrillex all the time. He created the album “My Name is Skrillex” and set it up for free download on his MySpace page. He continued to produce tracks, which have since become popular across the nation.
In early 2011, he began touring again, releasing new singles throughout the tour. Some singles were featured in video games and on television, such as “Reptile,” which was featured on a Mortal Kombat commercial. His success in 2011 brought him to Coachella, where he performed with Korn.
2011 ended well for Skrillex, bringing him five Grammy Award nominations at the 54th Grammy Awards, which included “Best New Artist.” Of the five nominations, he won three: “Best Dance/Electronica Album,” “Best Dance Recording,” and “Best Remixed Recording.” In addition to this, he was nominated for the BBC Sound of 2012 poll, as well as being named MTV’s “Electronic Dance Music Artist of the Year.”
In 2012, Skrillex created the song “Bug Hunt,” which was featured in the popular children’s movie Wreck It Ralph. He even got to make a brief cameo as a DJ in the beginning of the film.
Overall, Skrillex has found success in music—he has won a total of eight Grammy Awards and currently holds the world record for the most Grammy Awards won by an electronic dance music artist. Most recently, he has begun working as part of a duo with Diplo called Jack U. They announced that they would be touring with the record label Mad Decent. As fans did their best to figure out exactly who Jack U was, the secret was revealed when Diplo finally came out and revealed that it was a mix of Skrillex and Diplo.
