Romeo Santos is an American singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer. He was born Anthony Santos in the Bronx, New York. He came from humble beginnings, and as a young man, discovered his passion for bachata music, though it had not yet taken the music scene by force. He is most well known for his work as the lead singer of the bachata group Aventura. It was with this group that he really found success and fame—he’s even referred to by many as the King of Bachata Music.
Before becoming a member of Aventura, Santos founded a group called “Los Tinellers.” The name came from a phonetic pronunciation of the word “teenagers” said with a Dominican accent. The band was created with his cousin Henry and two of his friends from the early 90’s. They released one album called Trampa De Amor and at the end of the 90’s, decided to change their name to Aventura.
It was really with this band that Santos rose to fame and brought the public’s attention to bachata music by popularizing the sounds. In the decade that Aventura was producing music, they released five studio albums, which held many top 10 hits such as “Un Beso,” “El Perdedor,” and “Dile Al Amor.” Many have argued, however, that their most popular song is “Obsesion.” This song remained number one in Italy for sixteen consecutive weeks.
In early 2011, after much success with Aventura, Santos announced he was leaving the band in order to pursue a solo career. May of that same year, he released his first album Formula, Vol. 1. His song “You,” immediately became a hit, rocketing to #1 on the Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Songs charts. This album would later win a Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Latin Album.
From there, his fame was unstoppable. In 2012, he sold out his show in NYC’s Madison Square Garden three nights in a row. This performance was then made into a packaged CD/DVD combination that was released as a live album. In addition to this, his double-header show at Yankee Stadium in 2014 completely sold out. This concert was also special because it marked the first time a Latin artist headlined at the new Stadium.
Music is not the only thing that Santos is known for doing. He’s also been in several films, expanding his talents into acting. He made his debut in the film Furious 7, which was released in April of 2015. He took another role in the film adaptation of the popular video game Angry Birds, which is expected to come out in the summer of 2016.
Santos has done so much for bachata and has successfully put bachata music on the map. His passion for the music comes through in all he does, and his listeners can definitely feel it each time they watch him perform. Across the country, people have taken to Santos and his music—a survey of jukeboxes even showed that Santos was one of the most often played songs, coming in second only to The Rolling Stones. This love doesn’t seem likely to fade any time soon.
